Myth or Fact....You decide.

Hi People,

Ok this is embarrassing I know, especially after all the promises I made last time to be more consistent, the apologies at this point have become redundant but I’ll still offer one all the same…thine shall not vex with me, please.

I promised myself when I started doing this again that instead of writing just to write I’d sit it out until I had something meaningful to say, it’s not much in the way of explanations but its honest. If it isn’t going to be interesting or in any way beneficial why bother? So I focused on other pressing issues and now things have calmed down slightly..here I am.

Rounding up the subject of alternative therapies is earth stones which is quite a broad subject but to avoid going on and on I’ll keep the focus on lava stones, gemstones and crystals. Yeah, I know I know, it’s a bit out there, but hey, it never hurts to expand the knowledge base, what you do with the information is up to you, just read with an open mind and it may interest you enough to want to try out. I’ll start with lava stones, simply because there is a scientific basis for how they work, which any geologist can attest to.

Lava stones are obtained from Lava/Volcanic rock, an igneous rock formed by the cooling and solidification of magma (molten rock from the earth's crust expelled through volcanic eruptions) on or near the surface and conditioned with intense heat and pressure.

It is a hard, unusual looking, uneven stone with holes, ridges and pores that by virtue of its composition is very absorbent, which brings us to why it is great for aromatherapy.

When an essential oil is added to lava stone, it soaks it up completely and can retain the oil(s)’s aroma and effects, for as long as 2-3 days at a time or up to a week if you use heavier oils. Because of this retention ability and its unique look, lava stone is molded into bead-like balls usually to create aromatherapy/diffuser jewelry e.g. bracelets, necklaces, earrings etc. In its raw form, the stone is lightweight which lends to its appeal in jewelry making, but can be abrasive due to the uneven texture which ain't good, so it is coated with wax for a more polished look and to smooth out the abrasiveness, eliminating any unpleasantness to the skin. Lava rock is naturally black, dark grey or in some cases a very dark brown but often dyed to a variety of colors primarily for aesthetic appeal. The flip-side however is that there are a lot of synthetically created stones on the market which may absorb a little oil but not as much as real lava would neither will the oil retention be as strong.

In making jewelry, lava stone is most often paired or accented with gemstones e.g. onyx, turquoise, agate, tiger eye etc. and not just by chance, they A. make them look more fashionable to wear and B. are purported to have healing benefits in their own right (I’ll get into that in a bit). Personally, the jury is out on if crystals and gemstones actually do have any true healing benefits, but history shows they've been used throughout many civilizations for this specific reason, so there just might be something there...right? There is however, no documented evidence to back these claims which have been dismissed by the scientific community as ‘pseudoscience” but some people swear its true so who am I to knock other people's beliefs? All I do is just state the facts as they are available to me, providing you with both sides of the argument and you can make up your own mind. In all honesty I just choose the stones on my bracelets based on how pretty they look and what colors I like….shallow you say? Most probably, but here we are!

Still on the anecdotal and historical beliefs (neither proven or accepted scientifically) Lava is said to be a stone of rebirth which has grounding properties, strengthens our connection to the earth, dissipates anger, calms, relieves stress and anxiety, enhances fertility, improves creativity and communication, brings luck, cleanses negativity, provides strength, courage, stability and promotes positive changes.

Most of these attributed properties are due to the process of its creation, allow me explain: Magma (from which lava is formed) is said to contain the immense powers of the depths of the earth which has gone through many transformations over millions and millions of years. It is believed that due to the destruction and chaos the fiery magma wreaks when it erupts from volcanoes, it has a fierce, raw, fire energy. Coupled with the grounding energy of the earth’s depths, the 2 energies balance themselves out to create a tranquil calmness which helps attain inner peace, inner calm, stillness and spark creative energy that has been buried deep within while serving as an anchor to keep you grounded to the earth and is thus associated with the Root Chakra; when the root chakra is stabilized, you feel safe, anchored and more positive.

Where stones are sourced is also considered very important as some cultures like Iceland and Hawaii find it disrespectful and bad luck for lava to be removed from their land, other places e.g. Spain, Colorado (USA) and South America have no issue with removal. Still not saying I believe in all that superstition but I am Nigerian and superstition is how we roll so better safe than sorry and to that end, we do not buy or sell any stones originating from Iceland or Hawaii.

Using them is easy, these are a few ways:

1. Add between 1-3 drops of essential oils directly on the lava stones and allow the stones to absorb the oils completely (i usually wait around 10 minutes while i do other things) wear your beads and go about your day inhaling as or if needed.

2. Blend your essential oils in a little carrier oil, put some of the blend on your palms and just by rubbing your palms together the oil gets into the beads.

3. Create your blend in a roller bottle and just add the blend to the balls with that.

The only caveat is your essential oils MUST be pure to avoid negative reactions on your skin if you choose the first method. Then just go about your day, diffusing your oils on the move, kind of like carrying a diffuser with you.

In aromatherapy, natural gemstones aren’t just beautiful, complex stones that give your jewelry that stylish flair, they are also believed to add a second layer of healing benefits and there is a wide array to choose from each with its own claim of benefits purported to it e.g.

Howlite: Calming to the body and an overactive mind, stress relief

Amazonite: Energy healing, chakra balancing, restores serenity and removes negativity .

Agate: Increase concentration, confidence and focus, harmonizing, strengthening and grounding

Amethyst: Relaxing, stress relief, balances the mind to improve insight.

Onyx: Promotes mental and physical stamina, improves logic and memory, strengthening, balancing, confidence building

Tiger Eye: Releases fear and anxiety, harmonizing and balancing, unclouds emotions to improve clarity, discernment and understanding.

Turquoise: Healing, strengthens mind and body, improves communication.

Other gemstones and crystals include Apatite, Apophyllite, Aquamarine, Aventurine, Azurite, Tourmaline, Sunstone, Bloodstone, Bronzite, Carnelian, Quartz, Chrysocolla, Celestite, Chrysophase, Lapis Lazuli, Hematite, Moonstone, Obsidian, Jade, Jasper, Dumortierite, Fluorite and so many more, each said to affect one or more of the chakras. Some people even choose their stones based on their date of birth and/or Astrological signs, I’m a Virgo so mine would be Sapphire, Agate, Peridot & Carnelian.

Now like I said earlier, I’m not saying any of the superstitions or anecdotal benefits are true, neither am I dismissing them as total hogwash…nope! I just like to know and try stuff. For me, the lava stones are the marquis player on the bracelets because they do exactly what they are meant to do i.e. diffuse my oils. I tend to do the absolute most, and sometimes take on more than i should so being stressed to capacity is unfortunately par for the course at times. The luxury of having my oils on my wrist allows me to inhale them as often as I want during the day without having to carry an actual bottle, which saves and protects my oils….always a winning combination for me.

You know we are waay to cool for me to whet your appetite without having something for you now don't you? Naaa, of course i wouldn't do that to ya!

In stock now are some gorgeous lava stone bracelets with a variety of gemstones as part of our new product line of Aromatherapy jewelry which we have aptly named The Halcyon Collection

To make choosing oils for diffusion or any other purpose easier, we've broken down the product information on our website into collapsible sections detailing Physical Healing, Skin & Hair care, Inhalation (emotional, mental and spiritual benefits) and other information on each oil so you can focus on what your specific needs.

Well it seems like 2018 has just whizzed past, Christmas is less than 6 weeks away and 2019 is less than 2 months away...time flies!! There is so much to do as the year winds down for business owners corporations and small business like ours alike. That laser-focus on the New Year has been in activated for a while but more so now, we have to perfect as much as possible all the new stuff we'd like to introduce, fine tune existing services and just generally do what we can to be better in every way.

Its about that time that I've got to bounce, so much to do so little time. The end of the year is so stressful and all this customs nonsense just made it even worse (thankfully its over for now) but hey we're in Naija its always something isn't it?

We only have one body, when we treat it well it returns the favor.

Be good to yourself and others.

Until we chat again,

Peace & Love
