Product description:

One of the most famous essential oils used worldwide, Myrrh aka Bol, Bola, Hirabol or Merra is extracted via steam distillation of the dried bitter, gummy resin obtained from Commiphora myrrha, a small thorny tree native to Africa and the Middle East from the family Burseracae aka the Torchwood or Incense family whose members also include Frankincense and Palo Santo.

The sap which is the tree’s lifeblood must be removed very skillfully to only create an injury but not enough to kill it, the wound stimulates a process called gummosis in which the tree tries to heal itself by oozing the gum/sap to heal the damage.

Named for “Murr” or “Mur”, the Arabic word for bitter, in Greek it also means Ancient Spice, Myrrh has been valued over millennia by many cultures for its versatility and effectiveness when used for its plethora of benefits from therapeutic to beauty and religious or spiritual.

Records show that in Ancient times, Myrrh was so valuable it was considered equal to its weight in gold. In China its use goes back as far as the Tang dynasty (AD 600) and is renown as one of the 3 gifts of the Magi to the infant Jesus Christ along with Frankincense and Gold, and mentioned on its own exactly 17 times in the Bible which shows its value and versatility.

One Greek and Syrian legend tells the story of Myrrha, who was transformed into a Myrrh tree by the gods for her own protection to escape her father, King Thesis’ destructive anger and it is believed that the tree’s resin are her tears.
