Product description:
Oregano Essential oil is derived through steam distillation of the leaves of Origanum vulgare, a flowering plant from the Mint family native to the high-altitude terrains of Europe and The Mediterranean which is now grown all over the world.
Oregano is one of the more popular spices used till today with a long history in several civilizations throughout Renaissance Europe particularly with the Greeks and Romans as a bold flavored herb to provide spiciness and a slight bitterness to dishes, but it has also been valued for its plethora of therapeutic benefits in these and other ancient civilizations including the Chinese.
According to Greek mythology, the goddess Aphrodite created Oregano to spread happiness so newlyweds in Ancient Greece were traditionally crowned with its dried sprigs as a blessing to ensure happiness in their new marriage, in fact its name origin is from the Greek words “Oros” and “Ganos” meaning “Mountain” and “Joy” or “Delight” respectively, so its name literally translates to “Joy of the Mountains”.
Hildegard, who is regarded as one of the first known naturopaths listed over 12,000 uses of Oregano in her book of remedies which was first published in the middle ages. Hippocrates also used it in many of his concoctions, poultices, and salves for various issues.
There are over 40 different species of Oregano available but not all of them have the therapeutic benefits to which the use of this oil is attributed, research shows that the species best to use is Origanum vulgare.
